The New England Patriots open their season Sunday night against Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals. This opening game however will have a different feel to it than that of recent Patriots openers. That is because Tom Brady coming of another very good season will not be under center. That job for the first four games of the season belongs to Jimmy Garoppolo. As Brady serves his Deflategate suspension the 62nd pick of the 2014 draft will be the man to lead the Patriots against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans, and Bills. Garoppolo has some NFL game experience however he has never started an NFL game. When he was drafted one of Garoppolo’s faults was that he was coming from a program in Eastern Illinois that didn’t use the traditional pocket passer offense. Garoppolo however has the faith of the Patriots coaches just like Brady did when he was a rookie. Brady became of the best as a result of a near fatal Injury to then starter Drew Bledsoe.
Garoppolo by no means is on the verge of replacing Brady under center for the Patriots. Brady is still one of the best and has shown no signs of slowing down. Patriots Coach Bill Belichick even laughed at the notion when asked by a reporter earlier in the preseason. The Patriots are predicted by many to go 2-2 without Brady under center. The Patriots however arnt asking Jimmy to do a lot and a 3-1 record before Brady returns is not impossible. The Patriots are asking Garoppolo to do the same thing they asked Brady which was go out their and do your best. Garoppolo has a good defense behind him and new weapons on offense including wide receiver Chris Hogan and Tight end Martellus Bennett to add to an already deep receving corps. Since the Patriots used the 62nd pick of the 2014 pick on Garoppolo many have said he was picked to be Brady’s predecessor. It was the first time in a while that Belichick used a pick that high on a quarterback and with Brady’s age it may be time to start grooming his replacement.
Garoppolo wont take Brady’s spot however he does have a chance to show why he should be the one to take over when Brady can no longer play at a elite level. If he can do that then the Patriots will be in a very good position when Brady returns and Brady will be more motivated than hes ever been.
